Delhi is a primeval city. There are many renowned monuments in Delhi and each one depicts a separate period of history in Delhi. The area of New Delhi mostly covers the monuments that were built during the British era in Delhi like India Gate, Parliament house, Secretariat Building, Rashtrapati Bhawan and Teen Murti Bhawan.
The India Gate situated in the heart of New Delhi was designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1921. Formerly known as All India War Memorial, it is a famous landmark in Delhi and commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives in war and battles they fought for the British Indian Empire. Ten years later the monuments was dedicated to the nation by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. It is a 42 meter high gateway built with red sand stone and granite.
